Air Freight: Fast but Expensive
Air freight is the fastest shipping method, typically taking about 5-10 working days from China to the U.S., compared to 2 to 6 weeks by sea freight. While faster, it is more costly. For guaranteed on-time delivery, air freight can often be expedited for an additional fee, which sea freight cannot offer.
Two Main Air Freight Types
When shipping goods by air, there are two primary options depending on your speed and budget needs:
Standard Air Freight: This is the most common air shipping method. It offers a balance between cost and speed, with delivery typically within 5–10 working days. Standard air freight is ideal for general cargo that needs faster delivery than sea freight but doesn’t require the highest level of urgency.
Express Air Freight: Express air freight provides the fastest air delivery, often within 2–7 working days. It is more expensive than standard air freight but ensures priority handling and faster customs clearance. This option is best for time-sensitive shipments or valuable goods requiring guaranteed, quick delivery.
Both methods provide reliable international shipping with varying levels of speed and cost.
International Air Freight Process:
1. Goods Completion: Export documents are submitted, and goods are delivered to the carrier’s warehouse.
2. Transportation: Goods are loaded onto a plane and flown to the nearest airport to the final destination.
3. Customs Clearance: After clearance, the goods are transported to the local warehouse and dispatched.
Small Air Freight (under 50 kg) is quicker to clear, whereas large shipments (over 50 kg) face more complex customs procedures. We also offer a partial expedited service, allowing part of the order to be sent via air, while the rest is shipped by more affordable sea freight.
Ocean Freight: Slow but Affordable
Ocean freight is the most affordable way to ship goods internationally. Goods are packed into standardized containers and loaded onto giant container ships, allowing thousands of pounds of products to travel tens of thousands of miles at relatively low cost. While ocean freight is efficient, it is slow, and delivery dates are not guaranteed.
Ocean Freight Shipping Methods:
When shipping by ocean freight, there are two main methods to choose from: Full Container Load (FCL) and Less Than Container Load (LCL).
FCL (Full Container Load): Your goods fill an entire shipping container. This option is ideal for large shipments, as it provides better security, faster handling, and often lower costs per unit. The container is sealed and used only for your cargo, reducing the risk of damage or delays caused by sharing space.
LCL (Less Than Container Load): Your goods share space with other shipments in the same container. This is a cost-effective choice for smaller shipments that don’t require a full container. However, it may involve longer handling times, as the container must be consolidated and deconsolidated with other cargo.
Choosing between FCL and LCL depends on your shipment size, budget, and timeline.
Standard Ocean Shipping Process:
1. After goods are complete, the exporter submits documents, pays fees, and arranges transport from the factory to the shipping warehouse.
2. At the shipping warehouse, goods are packed into 20-foot or 40-foot steel containers. Once full, containers are sealed and sent to a bonded customs warehouse.
3. Containers are loaded onto an ocean liner with thousands of others. Ships sail to the destination country, where containers are unloaded at major ports.
4. Containers must go through clear customs, a stage where random inspections can cause delays. After clearance, goods move to a ground warehouse.
5. Finally, goods are separated, labeled, and trucked to the final destination.
Unlike express services like UPS or FedEx, ocean freight typically offers limited tracking, so most ocean carriers don’t update high-quality tracking information too frequently during the shipping process.

About ISF/Bond/Original BL
If choosing a shipping trade term such as CIF, FOB, DDU, etc. for ocean freight, importers must pay attention to two important things. These include:
ISF – ISF documents must be submitted to local customs before the ship sails. Failure to do so will result in a fine.
Bond – Importers must also hold an import bond. The validity period of the bond depends on the type of bond you purchase. The bond can be for a one-time import or for a full year. If you would like us to handle this part of your business, the best option we can offer you is a one-time bond.
BL – For importers from Australia, we will provide a Packing Declaration when you receive the Bill of Lading (BL). If you require a Certificate of Origin, we can also provide that. Please let us know that you require a Certificate of Origin before the ship sails.
