RGB and CMYK

RGB color mode is the most basic color mode, so RGB color mode is an important mode. As long as the image displayed on the computer screen, it must be in RGB mode. Because the physical structure of the display follows RGB.

CMYK is also called printing color mode, as the name implies, it is used for printing.
It has one big difference compared to RGB:

RGB mode is a luminous color mode, you can still see the content on the screen in a dark room.

CMYK is a color mode that relies on reflection. How do we read the content of newspapers? It is the sunlight or light that shines on the newspaper and then reflects it into our eyes to see the content.

It requires an external light source, and if you're in a dark room you won't be able to read the newspaper.

As long as the image displayed on the screen is expressed in RGB mode. As long as the image seen on the printed matter is expressed in CMYK mode.

For example, periodicals, magazines, newspapers, posters, etc. are all printed, so they are in CMYK mode.

Similar to RGB, CMY is the initial letter of the names of three printing inks: Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow.

And K takes the last letter of black, the reason why the first letter is not taken is to avoid confusion with blue (Blue).

In theory, only three inks of CMY are enough, and the three of them should be added together to get black.

However, since the current manufacturing process cannot produce high-purity ink, the result of CMY addition is actually a dark red color. Therefore, it is necessary to add a special black ink to neutralize it.

Does it matter whether you use CMYK or RGB when designing for your custom book printing?

Which color mode you use certainly matters when designing and proofreading your work. CMYK is the color mode most industry-recognized professional book printing company (like us) use to create documents.

If you created your design in RGB, many rich colors (blues and greens) won't appear as bright when printed using the CMYK process—even after conversion. This means that you will get a printed product that does not resemble the original design.

You can avoid this if you design your original document in CMYK color mode or convert it from RGB to CMYK before sending it for printing. This way, you'll have the opportunity to color correct any colors that aren't appearing the way they should. Doing so allows you to describe exactly how your document will look when printed, and gives you more control over the process.

It is easier to prepare a design for printing than to have to reprint it because there is no work to prepare it for. In the end, you'll find that designing this way will save you stress, time, and money.
