International Paper Sizes in Printing
In offset printing, the process typically begins with feeding large A1-sized sheets into the press. These sheets are carefully laid out with multiple pages arranged in what are called “signatures”—groups of pages that are printed together, then folded, trimmed, and bound to create the final book or product.
The A-series paper sizes, defined by the ISO 216 international standard, are based on a simple principle: each size is half the size of the previous one when folded in half parallel to its shorter sides. For example: A1 is the base size for many presses. A2 is half of A1. A3 is half of A2. A4 is half of A3—and so on. A5, A6, and A7 follow the same logic.
This cascading sizing system allows printers to efficiently fit a set number of pages on a single A1 sheet, minimizing waste and reducing cost. By printing in signatures on larger sheets, we avoid the high expense of printing each page individually.
While most of the world follows ISO 216 standards, countries like the USA, Canada, and some in Latin America use their own sizing systems (e.g., Letter, Legal).
